Screen time as “relaxation.”
Social media or binge-watching feels relaxing but often keeps the body in mild alert mode — especially through news feeds or exciting content right before bed.
Alcohol to “wind down.”
Alcohol can feel relaxing in the short term but demonstrably disrupts sleep quality, and with it, nighttime cortisol regulation.
**Pure “doing nothing.”**
Passive rest (like simply lying on the couch) helps less than active relaxation techniques that specifically engage the nervous system.
What Actually Works
1. Controlled Breathing
One of the best-studied methods for lowering cortisol is deliberate, slow breathing — particularly techniques with an extended exhale. This activates the parasympathetic nervous system, the part responsible for recovery, and directly counteracts the stress response. 2. Regular Exercise — But the Right Dose
Moderate exercise, like brisk walking or light jogging, demonstrably helps reduce stress. Important: extremely intense training can actually raise cortisol levels in the short term — balance makes the difference here.
3. Adequate, Regular Sleep
Sleep deprivation and elevated cortisol form a vicious cycle: too little sleep raises cortisol, and elevated cortisol in turn makes it harder to fall asleep. A consistent bedtime routine can break this cycle.
4. Social Connection
– Studies show that positive social interactions — a conversation with someone you trust, physical closeness — can lower cortisol levels. Isolation works in the opposite direction.
5. Journaling and Reflection
Deliberately writing down thoughts and worries has been shown to interrupt mental “rumination loops,” one of the main triggers for sustained elevated cortisol. By moving thoughts out of your head and onto paper (or a screen), you measurably relieve your nervous system.
